Psychoanalysis is an in-depth model of healing that deeply respects the power of the unconscious, honors a developmental process rooted in history, and fosters reflective capacity in both patient and clinician.


Each clinical moment holds the potential to further the therapeutic process. The task of the clinician is to learn to listen more deeply both to what the patient is saying and to what the patient is not quite saying. When we listen with not only our heads but also our hearts, it frees us up to respond in ways more powerfully attuned to what the patient needs in that moment to grow. It is inevitable that each such choice we make, although allowing something to be gained, will also cause something else to be lost.


This workshop will translate a number of core psychoanalytic concepts into contemporary terms that will be accessible to clinicians of all theoretical orientations. You will learn to identify and begin to decode the patient’s unconscious communications, which will allow you to appreciate that the patient's actions and unspoken words are giving voice to what longs to be heard but cannot always be articulated. You will become more skilled at using transference and countertransference to facilitate the unfolding process between patient and clinician. Attention will also be paid to assessing the patient's developmental state, to clarifying the distinction between part-object and whole-object experiences, and strengthening the therapeutic frame in order to promote growth.





Michele Gomes, Psy.D., is the Executive Director of Wright Institute Los Angeles. She has a part-time private practice in West Los Angeles, and is an advanced candidate in psychoanalytic training and a faculty member of the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy program at the New Center for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Gomes is a member of the clinical Ph.D. faculty at CSPP-LA, and her professional interests include teaching, training, and institutional development.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) uses individual case conceptualizations to explain how symptoms are maintained, which guides interventions and protocol use. Typically, CBT clinicians target a single disorder and may not feel competent to address complex cases with multiple disorders and problems. In case-formulation-driven CBT, therapists can develop hypotheses about and assess psychological mechanisms that underlie a patient’s challenges allowing the clinician to efficiently treat multiple problems and disorders by incorporating cognitive and behavioral protocols. This workshop offers current best practices and practical strategies that therapists can use to identify mechanisms, develop a case formulation, design a treatment plan based on the formulation, and intervene to target specific cognitive and behavioral mechanisms. The workshop will also provide ways to collect data throughout treatment in order to test the formulation and evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment plan. Teaching methods include didactic presentations, case examples, and interactive exercises.



Lynn McFarr, Ph.D., is the Director of the Cognitive Behavioral/Dialectical Behavior Therapy Clinic, former Interim Training Director, and the former Interim Chief of Psychology at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. She is also a Professor of Health Sciences in the Department of Psychiatry for the David Geffen School of Medicine and the Director of CBT California (CBTC). Dr. McFarr received her Ph.D. from New York University (NYU) in clinical psychology and trained as a cognitive behavioral therapist under Dr. Robert Leahy at the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy in New York City. She completed her internship at the Sepulveda VA and her postdoctoral fellowship at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Dr. McFarr is an award-winning trainer of psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, and psychiatric nurses in Cognitive Behavioral Therapies including DBT, CBASP, and ACT. She has twice been acknowledged as Teacher of the Year by the Department of Psychiatry at Harbor-UCLA and has also received Psychologist of the Year from the L.A. County Department of Mental Health. She lectures for major universities and regularly presents at national and international conferences. Dr. McFarr is a Beck Scholar and is on the executive board for both the Academy of Cognitive Therapy, and The International Association for Cognitive Therapy (IACP). She founded the Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Society of Southern California as well as the listservs for the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT) and CBASP. Dr. McFarr was the senior editor of Cognitive Therapy for eight years. Dr. McFarr conducts research on supervision, training and adherence in CBT, DBT, CBASP and ACT as well as studies on Therapy Interfering Behaviors and Secondary Targets in DBT. She is a member of the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Strategic Planning Meeting, a consortium of international DBT researchers, and was the Chair of the annual meeting of the International Society for the Improvement and Teaching of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (ISITDBT) for 2014-2015. She is published in the areas of CBT for schizophrenia, medication compliance, and adult friendships issues as well as papers on DBT processes and the development of model curricula for training doctoral students in CBT. Dr. McFarr was intensively trained in DBT in 2000 and 2010 and CBASP in 2007.
