Psychopharmacology Demystified: What Every Clinician Needs to Know

At times, modern psychopharmacology can be confusing, yet all clinicians need a working understanding of the medications available for their patients, their side effects, and the skills to communicate appropriate information quickly and intelligently to patients, medical professionals and treatment teams. This course will impart the essential competencies every therapist needs to know about treatment options, new medications, the latest research on side effects, contraindications, and efficacy of major medication classes prescribed for mental health disorders. Learn why patients are prescribed the medications they are taking and the thought processes highly-skilled psychiatrists use to determine them. You will learn about symptom clusters, medication categories, basic psychopharmacology, similarities, and differences among the members of each medication class.  The latest approved medications, “off-label” (non-FDA approved) use of medications, and the thought process in choosing which medicine is best for a specific client and the important variables used in determining these decisions. You will also learn biological/family responses to specific agents, comorbid conditions (both medical and psychological) and standard medication algorithms for selected DSM 5 diagnoses in adults and children and their controversies. There will be time for questions and discussions of clinical material.
