"Effects of Gender Transition on Sexuality: How does feminizing/masculinizing hormone therapy and genital surgery affect one’s sexual response?"

Speaker: Natalia Zhikhareva, Ph.D.

Presentation Description: Most transgender people view transition as some form of physical body modification via hormones and/or surgery. With insurance companies expanding to cover transgender related services, more individuals today are able to obtain hormone therapy and most importantly genital surgery. These procedures cause many changes that affect how trans-
people experience their sexuality. Some experience changes in their libido, increased interest in specific types
of sexual practices, changes in physical sexual response and even changes in the types of people to whom they are attracted. This presentation explores the effects of gender transition on ones sexuality and offers solutions on how to work with transgender individuals.

Speaker Bio: Dr Natalia Zhikhareva (Dr Z) is a clinical psychologist specializing in transgender care and has worked with transgender individuals for over a decade. Her passion working in the transgender community fostered an interest in clinical research leading to the publication of “Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis of Projective Drawings of Pre-Operative Male-to- Female Transgendered Individuals Perception of Their Genitalia.” Dr Z's most recent work includes writing and contributing to Male-to- Female and Female-to- Male transgender courses, offered by the online training program Loveology University. She has been featured as a speaker on current transgender issues at Empowered Trans Woman Summit, founded the Hormone Readiness Group for trans-youth living in Portland, Oregon, and is the facilitator of the Transition & Beyond Group in LA.
