As our western culture’s understanding and acceptance of gender diversity continues to actively expand, more and more individuals are embracing their authentic gender selves across the lifespan. In light of this, many clinicians, despite their specializations, may find themselves working with clients who hold a gender diverse identity and/or expression.  This presentation will seek to introduce clinicians to foundational understandings and competencies necessary for clinical work with transgender and gender nonconforming clients. The following topics will be discussed:

  • Gender development
  • Paradigm shifts in the understanding of gender
  • Cisgender privilege
  • Key clinical issues and best practices

Caroline Carter, Psy.D., has been a therapist with the Los Angeles Gender Center since 2011. She works predominantly in LAGC’s Child and Adolescent Program and sees transgender and gender nonconforming clients weekly in South Pasadena and Westwood. In 2014 she helped to develop LAGC’s Training Program and she is currently the Program Coordinator for LAGC’s continuing education development and implementation. Caroline has trained clinicians and educators on gender diversity both locally and nationally. Caroline received her doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Azusa Pacific University and her masters in Women’s Studies in Religion from Claremont Graduate University.
