Sex Positive Partner Counseling in the Age of Polyamory

Presenter: Dossie Easton, M.A., LMFT

Held at the New LACPA Office

6345 Balboa Blvd., Bldg 2, Suite 126

Encino, CA 91316

Get ready to learn, grow and be challenged to meet the needs of your sexually diverse clients. LACPA welcomes bestselling author and sexuality expert, Dossie Easton, for a highly informative experiential training on sexual diversity and non-monogamy. This workshop will challenge long held assumptions and assist you to work affirmatively, sensitively and effectively with non-traditional clients.

In the past, Marriage Counseling was renamed Couple Counseling to better meet the needs of clients and avoid hetero-normative bias. The dominant culture privileges the couple, and this has the effect of negating other healthy, valid frameworks for building and maintaining relationships and families. Given this, the term Couple Counseling is now evolving into Partner Counseling to avoid mono-normative and couple-centric biases that reduce clinical effectiveness with non-conventional clients and relationship styles.

Working with sexual diversity can entail a great deal of triggering and flooding for both the client and clinician. Utilizing the experiential exercises and skills development employed in sex therapist training, this workshop will increase the clinician’s capacity to transform these unwelcome emotions into healing experiences. This will assist clients in taking better care themselves in relationships, setting workable agreements and embracing cast off feelings and healing old wounds, while increasing authentic living and connection to others.

This workshop will explore therapist disclosure and transparency, provide an understanding of the diverse and non-normative types of families and relationship styles that people often form and cover issues with children raised in non-traditional relationships. It will address issues with relationship agreements and jealously. It will illuminate how to work non-judgmentally with affairs and how to assist clients to get their lives back into integrity without shaming, minimizing or reflexively pathologizing outside partners (known affirmatively as met amour). It will increase your clinical capacity and comfort levels working with sexuality that is either different than yours or unfamiliar, and prepare you for what the clients who walk into your office seeking sex-positive counseling require.

This is a full day workshop. Continental breakfast and catered lunch will be provided, as well as an opportunity for a meet and greet with the presenter during lunch. This workshop is being offered during LACPAs open enrollment membership drive, so please invite interested non-LACPA members to attend. Non-members will be able to register for this event (and only this event) at member rates, learn about the value of LACPA membership, and be offered an opportunity to join during the workshop. Many of LACPAs continuing education events sell out, so please register early to insure you have a seat at this exciting event!
