LACPA’s Summer Book Club Meetings
Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer
and
The Wild Truth by Carine McCandless

This summer we will also do something innovative: read both of these memoirs about Chris McCandless.  In April 1992 Chris, a young man from a well-to-do family, hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness. He had abandoned most of his possessions and invented a new life for himself.  Four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter.  Jon Krakauer constructed a prism through which he reassembles the disquieting facts of McCandless's short life, in part using his diary, letters and two notes found at a remote campsite which tell of his desperate effort to survive.  Krakauer's 1997 book, Into the Wild,  was an international bestseller and in 2007 Sean Penn's directed an inspirational film which added to Chris McCandless’ global fame.  Yet there are aspects of Chris’s life that are only revealed in his sister’s book The Wild Truth, published in 2015.  Carine was Chris's best friend, the person with whom he had the closest bond, and who witnessed firsthand the dysfunctional family dynamic that made Chris willing to embrace the harsh wilderness of Alaska.

Want more?  Amazon Prime recently added Sean Penn’s movie, Into the Wild, so you can also see the movie!

It has a great cast and excellent reviews on IMDb and Amazon.
