Recent changes in legislation are dramatically changing the perception, availability, and utilization of cannabis. Currently, 1 in 8 adults and 1 in 5 adults under 30 are consuming medical and recreational cannabis. These changes affect your clients and your work with them and highlight the need for clear, clinical information based on the latest findings and evidence-based research.

Michael Backes is a world-renowned expert in the burgeoning field of cannabis science. He is the author of Cannabis Pharmacy: The Practical Guide to Medical Marijuana, with a foreword by Dr. Andrew Weil. Cannabis Pharmacy has been the best-selling medical marijuana book on Amazon since its publication. In this talk, Backes will outline the state of the science in a sophisticated, nuanced way that is sadly lacking in the typical discourse. He will deepen your understanding of how cannabis interacts with the mind and body, thus allowing you to address cannabis use (and abuse) with innovative approaches – including the latest harm reduction strategies.

He will cover the latest fMRI studies of cannabis’ effect on the brain, as well as the critical role of cannabis chemistry in understanding and reducing adverse effects, dependency and withdrawal. He will provide a survey of the endocannabinoid system and its role in emotion, memory and cognition, and how the various compounds in cannabis (THC, CBD, terpenes) act on neural networks and the body. He will cover medical and psychiatric indications and contraindications for use. Attendees will learn how to work with patients in a way that is supportive, grounded, and reduces harm. You will learn about appropriate dosing, routes of administration, and extractions such as edibles, wax, and shatter. Medical recommendations, procurement and quality of medicine, and guidance for skillful use will be discussed. Included will be an overview of key terms such as indica, sativa, and CBD. He will also cover the newly discovered cannabis related illness: Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome. There will also be ample time to ask questions for any information not covered.

Michael Backes, is the author of Cannabis Pharmacy: The Practical Guide to Medical Marijuana, editor of the book Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany, and co-founder of Cornerstone Research Collective, the first evidence-based medical cannabis collective in California. Backes secured funding for the Cannabis monographs, the first scientific monographs published in the U.S. since the 1940s. He sits on the Cannabis Committee of the American Herbal Products Association and is a founding board member of the National Cannabis Industry Association. For over a decade, Michael Backes worked as technical advisor to the late author Michael Crichton on book and film projects including Jurassic Park, Timeline, Disclosure, Prey, Twister and also co-wrote with Crichton the screenplay for Rising Sun.  Backes co-founded the American Film Institute Digital Media Studies program and the AFI/Apple Computer Center for Film and Videomakers. Currently, Backes is a member of the 5D Institute think tank based in Los Angeles. Backes has lectured on emerging technologies at universities around the world including Stanford, USC, UCLA and Tokyo University. His work has been profiled in Wired, Vice, Premiere, Variety, Hollywood Reporter, Slake Quarterly, and more.
