Unraveling Cultural Countertransference: The Experience of Caucasian Therapists
Working with Asian-American Adults
Dr. Rosenfield will discuss the findings of her study involving seasoned clinicians from a variety of religious, socio-economic and geographic backgrounds about their beliefs, feelings, and sense of connection with their American-born second-generation Asian clients. She will share their responses as they navigated the cross-cultural dyadic relationship and the unfamiliar terrain of the client’s bi-cultural identity. The presentation will provide the basis of discussion of other cross cultural dyadic relationships in therapy.

Lynn Rosenfield, Ph.D., LCSW, grew up in New York, received her BA from Oberlin College, her MSW from Smith College School for Social Work and her doctorate from the Sanville Institute for Clinical Social Work and Psychotherapy. She also completed a three-year program in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Institute of Contemporary Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles. Lynn was catapulted into a social work career in 1969 when she helped to organize Ozone House, a crisis shelter for runaway youth that is still in existence in Ann Arbor, Michigan. After working at a child guidance clinic and as the director of a district office at Jewish Family Service of LA, Lynn began and has maintained a private practice working with individuals, couples and families as well as co-mediating divorces with an attorney partner. She served as a faculty/field advisor for Smith College School for Social Work for 18 years and is currently adjunct faculty in their certificate program in advanced clinical supervision. She has published an article, Web-Based Supervisor Training: Real Relationships in Cyberspace (Smith College Studies in Social Work, special issue on clinical supervision, 2012). Lynn has had a life-long interest in other cultures and her presentation today is drawn from the research for her doctoral dissertation.
