It's not About Sex: Rethinking the Nature of Sexual Addiction

Presented by: Magen Todd, Ph.D.

The prevailing construct that guides sexual compulsivity treatment is that the rewarding properties of a behavior (e.g., watching pornography) drive the development of addiction. Subsequently, interventions tend to focus on eliminating behaviors rather than treating underlying etiological issues.  This leads to short-term solutions, poor treatment outcomes, and the perpetuation of stigma.

Magen Todd, Ph.D., is a psychologist, Certified Sex Therapist, and Certified Sex Addiction Therapist. She is the Founder and Director of Meridian Clinical Group where she leads a multidisciplinary team that specializes in sex, trauma and addiction therapy.  Along with her clinical work, Dr. Todd is the Co-Founder of the Unison Project, an organization focused on leveraging innovations in digital health to advancing discovery in addiction treatment.
