The Divorce, Separation and Reconfigured Families SIG invites you to join us for a discussion on adoption and clinical implications for patients and families.

Dr. Cheri Adrian will speak in an informal, interactive process about dealing with uncertainties and fears about adoption, encouraging creative ways of dealing with family differences, building a strong sense of family belonging, and teaching special parenting skills for adoptive children.

Dr. Adrian was 51 and single when she adopted her daughter Gaea in Guatemala 19 years ago, and she has since known and worked with many different kinds of adoptive families with children from all over the world.  She has a wealth of personal experience as well as clinical knowledge to share about how to be helpful—and how not to be helpful-- to people considering or creating nontraditional families through adoption, particularly international adoption, as well as through other means.  For many years she and her daughter have co-taught a yearly seminar about their adoption experience in the UCLA Department of Psychiatry Women's Life Center.  She is UCLA-educated Clinical and Forensic Psychologist in private practice since 1990; she works in West Los Angeles and Calabasas with individuals and couples, does civil forensic work, is a Qualified Medical Examiner for the Department of Workers’ Compensation, and serves as an Expert for the Board of Psychology, Board of Behavioral Sciences, and other administrative licensing boards in California.
