“The Psychologists Role in Treating Individuals with Somatic and Cognitive Complaints"

About the speaker: Doug Polster, Ph.D., completed his Ph.D. in clinical psychology, with an emphasis in sports and health psychology, at Nova Southeastern University (NSU) in Fort Lauderdale, FL. While in graduate school, he worked as a sports psychologist for the NSU woman’s basketball team and was an adjunct professor at Broward College. He completed his clinical internship at the Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, FL where he focused on successful recovery from illness and injury. Following graduation, Dr. Polster completed a two-year Steve Tisch sponsored post-doctoral fellowship in sports neuropsychology at the UCLA Steve Tisch BrainSPORT Program. While on fellowship, he specialized in concussion management and established a new treatment for post-concussion syndrome. He continues to work at BrainSPORT as well as in private practice and is expanding his post-concussion syndrome model to include other sports-related injuries.

Synopsis: This lecture focuses on the challenges psychologists face when working with individuals with somatic and/or cognitive complaints. Prolonged post-concussion symptoms will be highlighted and treatment/referral options will be reviewed.
