Presentation:

Providing Therapeutic Support to Interfaith Families: Emphasis on Muslim/non-Muslim Interfaith Families

Presenter: Katie McHugh Akbar, LCSW

Friday, June 15, 2018

12:00 - 1:30p

The Muslim American population is steadily growing and has resulted in more Muslims marrying non-Muslims.  These pioneer families may increasingly be in need of therapeutic services.  Topics discussed in this presentation will include:

·        Opportunities and challenges faced by interfaith couples, families, and children raised in an interfaith household

·        Strategies and resources used by interfaith families for success

·        History of interfaith families in the United States, and organizations which support them

·        Clinical perspectives and tools to use with interfaith families

·        Unique aspects for Muslim/non-Muslim interfaith families

Katie McHugh Akbar, LCSW, is the co-founder of Muslim Christian Interfaith Families, a grassroots community group and aspiring nonprofit.  As a social worker, she has worked predominantly in the fields of health and mental health.  Katie wrote her undergraduate thesis at Northwestern University on interfaith relationships ("Dating Christians: Muslim and Jewish young adults’ experiences with interfaith relationships”) and she received her Masters in Social Work from Columbia University, concentrating in advanced generalist practice and programming.
