Rescheduled!

The LACPA Hiking Club Presents:

A hike in the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains, off PCH just north of Malibu Canyon Road, in exquisite Solstice Canyon.
The total distance for the hike will be ~ 6 miles and will take approximately 3 hours.
This is an amazing but challenging hike through a wide variety of terrains with magnificent ocean and canyon views.

Sunday, August 5th at 9:00 AM.

Meet at the trail head at the end of the parking lot for Solstice Canyon.   Detailed directions below.

RSVP to Andi Ackerman  andiackerman@aol.com.  We wait for those who have RSVP'ed.   Please call 818.426.0674 day of the hike if you need help getting there or have changed your mind.

Rating: I don’t have an official rating for this hike, but my hiking companions and I would rate this hike as moderate to mildly difficult based on the fairly steep ascents and descents that make up much of this hike.  The trail itself is well marked and well maintained and does not require any additional challenges beyond the rigor of the climb.   After a short walk up an old road from the parking lot, the hike puts us onto the Sostomo Trail, ascending and descending one side of the canyon to reach the Deer Valley Loop Trail.  This final loop takes us to the top of the canyon with sweeping coastal views extending from Santa Monica Bay to Point Dume.  We will return to our starting point along the lower portion of the Sostomo Trail.  Hiking boots or trail shoes with some tread are strongly recommended and hiking poles would be a real plus.  The trail is often open with limited shade, so sunscreen and a hat are recommended if the weather is warm; a light sweatshirt or other outer layer if the weather is cool.   Water is a must, and a snack for the trail is suggested since this is a longer hike.  Today there was water running in the creek, adding to the beautiful sights and sounds of this location.

Directions: From the San Fernando Valley, take the 101 Freeway to Las Virgenes Road and head towards the beach through Malibu Canyon. When you get to PCH, turn right and continue 2.3 miles to Corral Canyon Road.  Turn right on Corral Canyon and travel 0.2 miles to a well-marked entrance on the left.  Turn left, entering Solstice Canyon Park, and travel another 0.3 miles to the parking lot.  If you are coming from Santa Monica, Corral Canyon is about 14 miles from Santa Monica.  Once again, watch for Malibu Canyon Road (where Pepperdine University is), and travel another 2.3 miles to Corral Canyon as noted above.  (Please note that if the lot and the surrounding area are full, you will have to go back to the entrance, park on Corral Canyon and walk the 0.3 miles to the parking lot and the trail head.)

Parking: This is a National Park and parking is FREE!

More Info.:  For those who have not joined us for this hike, I am eager to share this amazing destination with you.  It has recovered amazingly well following fire damage several years ago.  Please be advised that this hike is not for beginning hikers or the "faint of heart."  I have tried to provide hikes of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty around Los Angeles; this hike is for those who like some distance and some challenge.  Dogs are permitted if they are on a leash.  There is some poison oak on the trail (not much) so pants rather than shorts are recommended.  There are restrooms at the start of the trail.

HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU AND/OR TO SEE YOU THERE!
