Date:  Monday, August 20, 2018

Time: 10:30 am - 12:00 pm

Topic: Befriending Chronic Pain and Illness Through a Mindfulness Approach

Description: This talk will discuss how we as psychotherapists can help our clients who struggle with chronic pain and illness using a mindfulness approach. Mindfulness principles such as compassion, acceptance, allowing, patience, and helping to separate the physical pain from the psychological struggle will be discussed. Denise will discuss how to reframe the struggle with pain and learn to hold it in a more expansive and life-affirming "container”.

Speaker Bio: Denise Bardovi is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Certified Biogenetic Therapist (CBT). Denise has been a body-oriented psychotherapist for almost 30 years and before that, she was a bodyworker for 16. Denise has been studying and practicing meditation since 2007.  She started with MBSR with Christiane Wolf for Chronic Illness and Pain Management, which had a profound impact on her life.  She has taken many classes at InsightLA and in 2014 she completed the Teacher’s Practicum for MBSR.   Her own journey living with chronic pain for the last 30 years has created a tremendous motivation for finding a way to have the best life possible. As part of her training, Denise has attended multiple residential silent retreats, each of which have allowed her to deepen her experience and training with how to deal with chronic pain.  She is looking forward to passing her many lessons on to others. She has been painting with the Painting Experience (mindful process painting) since 1986 and is now in their facilitator's program. Denise also currently leads a Meditation Sitting Group for Chronic Pain at Insight LA in Santa Monica.
