Bullying and the Special Needs Child

 

Presented by:  Esther Hess, Ph.D.

 

The Center for Disease Control estimates that 90% of special needs children will be bullied sometime in their lives.  This presentation will focus on the consequences of bullying at different developmental impasses, and what parents, teachers/professionals, and peers can do to stop these intimidations. Clinical vignettes will be examined to create practical solutions to this complex problem.

 

 

Esther Hess, Ph.D., is a developmental psychologist and executive director of a multidisciplinary treatment facility in West Los Angeles, Center for the Developing Mind.  Additionally, Dr. Hess is an author and national and international speaker on the subject of autism spectrum disorder and the impact of bullying on the special needs community. Course Goals and Educational Objectives:

1)     Attendees will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the signs of bullying present in special needs children by the end of the presentation.

2)     Attendees will be able to describe various types of bullying that are commonly applied in the intimidation of special needs children.

3)     Attendees will be able to discuss solution based strategies that parents, teachers/professionals and peers can do to prevent bullying in the special needs community

Parking info for Weekday/daytime programs:

 

The LACPA office address is THE ENCINO OFFICE PARK, 6345 Balboa Blvd, Building 2, Suite 126, Encino, CA 91316 - second building from Balboa Blvd., conveniently located near ample free daytime/weekday street parking on Balboa Blvd, south of Victory Blvd.  Both sides of Balboa have all day free parking.  There is also plenty of free parking at the Sepulveda Basin Sports Complex on the west side of Balboa, south of Victory, 6201 Balboa Blvd. (2nd driveway past the Busway). A 3-4 minute walk to the office door.  Wherever you park, please check the signs. 

 

Parking at The Encino Office Park lot between the hours of 9 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. is restricted to building tenants only.  Please do not park in the lot at the building.

Certification of Attendance for Continuing Education Credit

Please note that the Brown Bag Programs are being offered as a LACPA Membership Benefit.  Attendance is limited to 50 LACPA members. Should you have a friend or colleague who would like to attend, please have them join LACPA before they send in this registration form. Programs subject to change.

 

The Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. LACPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.

 

This course may be taken to satisfy the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) continuing education requirements.

 

 

It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that LACPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.  An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who arrive more than 5 minutes (for a 1.5 hour program) after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is complete will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.
