SIG Topic:
"Neurocognitive Challenges for Young Learners: A Roadmap for Identifying and Treating Academic, Emotional, and Social Difficulties"

Neurocognitive difficulties and subsequent academic challenges are relatively common in young learners, and occur in about 10-15% of students, and up to 25% with more lenient definitions. If unaddressed, these difficulties lead to poor motivation, decreased self-esteem, and emotional disengagement. As a consequence, students may exhibit internalizing behaviors (withdrawal, depression, anxiety) or externalizing behaviors (dysregulation, acting out, disciplinary problems). The interaction between neurodevelopmental difficulties and social/emotional disorders can be mutually reinforcing and complex. Although the academic consequences largely resolve with maturation, the emotional toll these challenges have on a young person’s trajectory over time are consequential, especially if left untreated. In this presentation, the phenomenology of various neurocognitive challenges will be reviewed from a developmental perspectives. Red flags for clusters of neurocognitive and academic problems will be presented, along with assessment, monitoring, and intervention strategies for clinical practice and school settings.

Talin Babikian, PhD, ABPP is a board certified child neuropsychologist with over 12 years of experience in clinical practice working with a broad spectrum of children and young adults, and their families. She specializes in the differential diagnosis of learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders, autism spectrum and related challenges, giftedness, and emotional and behavioral disorders. Dr. Babikian has a genuine, earnest and practical approach to her assessments that are both comprehensive and holistic in nature. She focuses on providing diagnostic clarification in a manner that will inform intervention planning that is positive and proactive. Her goal is for each family to walk away from an evaluation replacing a series of question marks with a set of clear steps they can take to help their child succeed academically, emotionally, and socially.  Dr. Babikian is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at UCLA, and services as Associate Director of BrainSPORT, an inter-departmental and multi-disciplinary program for identifying and treating brain injuries - including concussions - in youth and professional athletes, where she oversees the Sports Neuropsychology Fellowship training program.
