Psychiatric Medications: Pearls of Wisdom for Therapists


Presented by: Josephine McNary, M.D.


This is an overview on the use of psychiatric medications in the treatment of mood/anxiety disorders. We will discuss when to consider recommending medication. We will also discuss the different types of medication used, their efficacy in treatment of mood/anxiety disorders as well as common side effects.



 Josephine McNary, M.D., is a general adult psychiatrist at CalPsychaitry, a group practice located in Santa Monica, Downtown Los Angeles and Hermosa Beach. She is also staff at the UCLA Department of Psychiatry, where she provides inpatient care at the UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute. She has specialty training in treatment resistant mood disorders, psycho-oncology and women’s reproductive mental health.

Course Goals and Educational Objectives


Attendees will be able to 

1) describe when psychiatric medications are indicated in treatment of mood/anxiety disorders  

2) Compare efficacy and side effects of medications used to treat mood and anxiety disorders 

3) analyze treatment algorithms through presentation of clinical case vignettes.

The LACPA office address is THE ENCINO OFFICE PARK, 6345 Balboa Blvd, Building 2, Suite 126, Encino, CA 91316 - second building from Balboa Blvd., conveniently located near ample free daytime/weekday street parking on Balboa Blvd, south of Victory Blvd.  Both sides of Balboa have all day free parking.  There is also plenty of free parking at the Sepulveda Basin Sports Complex on the west side of Balboa, south of Victory, 6201 Balboa Blvd. (2nd driveway past the Busway). A 3-4 minute walk to the office door.  Wherever you park, please check the signs. 


Parking at The Encino Office Park lot between the hours of 9 a.m. – 6:30 p.m. is restricted to building tenants only.  Please do not park in the lot at the building.

Certification of Attendance for Continuing Education Credit

Please note that the Brown Bag Programs are being offered as a LACPA Membership Benefit.  Attendance is limited to 50 LACPA members. Should you have a friend or colleague who would like to attend, please have them join LACPA before they send in this registration form. Programs subject to change.


The Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. LACPA maintains responsibility for this program and its content.


This course may be taken to satisfy the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) continuing education requirements.



It is important to note that APA continuing education rules require that LACPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop.  An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who arrive more than 5 minutes (for a 1.5 hour program) after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is complete will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.
