The difficulties that bring people to treatment are often woven into the fabric of their lives and rooted in recurring patterns of thinking, feeling, motivation, attachment, coping, defending, and relating to others. Treatments that lead to meaningful change focus on these recurring psychological patterns, not just diagnoses and symptoms.

The morning lecture—based on Dr. Shedler’s internationally acclaimed American Psychologist article, "The Efficacy of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy”—will examine the seven core psy­chodynamic principles that underlie all effective therapies (regardless of therapy "brand”), such as enhancing self-knowledge, recognizing recurring life and relational patterns, and addressing problematic relational patterns as they arise in the therapy relationship. These principles form the foundation for evidence-based treatments that preserve the richness and complexity of meaningful psychological treatment.

The afternoon clinical workshop will build on concepts from the morning lecture, focusing on clinical case formulation and intervention. Workshop participants will develop clinical skills in working with challenging patients through clinical case presentations by workshop participants, with case discussion, live supervision, and role playing to demonstrate effective intervention. The workshop will focus on the use of therapists’ and clients’ emotional reac­tions to one another (transference and countertransference) as a crucial source of psycho­logical information that can provide a roadmap to effective intervention. This practical, hands-on clinical workshop will emphasizes psychodynamic concepts but will enhance the therapy skills of clinical practitioners of all theoretical orientations.



Jonathan Shedler, Ph.D.,
is known internationally as a psychologist, consultant, researcher, and author. He is best known for his article "The Efficacy of Psychody­namic Psychotherapy," which won worldwide acclaim for establishing psychodynamic therapy as an evidence-based treatment. His research and writing are shaping contem­porary views of personality patterns and disorders. He is author of the Shedler-Wes­ten Assessment Procedure (SWAP) and numerous scholarly and scientific articles.


Dr. Shedler lectures and leads workshops for professional audiences nationally and internationally, consults on psychological issues to U.S. and foreign government agencies, and offers clinical consulta­tion and study groups by videoconference to mental health professionals worldwide. Dr. Shedler is a Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and was formerly Director of Psychology at the University of Colorado Hospital Outpatient Psychiatry Depart­ment. He is also a certified professional ski instructor in Vail, Colorado.






Case Presenters:


Stephanie Law, Psy.D.,
is a Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Pasadena. Dr. Law received her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Rose­mead School of Psychology, an APA-accredited program located in La Mirada and specializes in PTSD, trauma, mood disorders, grief and bereavement, reverse culture shock, and issues of spirituality. In addition to her private practice, Dr. Law assists with Agreed Medical Examinations (AME) for Worker’s Compensation evaluations. In addition to public speaking engagements, Dr. Law is currently the President of the San Gabriel Valley Psychological Association (SGVPA) and a past Board Member of the Los Angeles Psychological Association (LACPA), as well as the California Psychological Association. She also serves as a Trustee on the CPA PAC Board.





Eran Solomon, M.A., RDT,
Wright Institute Postgraduate Fellow, Registered Drama Therapist, and Marriage and Family Therapy Intern, began his career as a drama therapist in Israel where he worked extensively with children, adolescents, and their parents treating a broad range of psychopathology. Eran received his Master’s degree in Expressive Therapies (with a specialization in Mental Health Counseling and Drama Therapy) from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA. Mr. Solomon also holds certificates specializing in group psychotherapy and eating disorders. He currently works with individuals and couples, and leads the Drama Therapy group as well as the adolescent program for the Susan B. Krevoy Eating Disorder Clinic at The Wright Institute Los Angeles (WILA).


Certification of Attendance for Continuing Education Credit

These workshops are sponsored by the Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA). LACPA is approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. LACPA maintains responsibility for the program and its content. LACPA also is approved by the Board of Behavioral Science as a provider of Continuing Education Units (CEU) for MFTs and LCSWs: Provider No. PCE 276. The licensee is responsible for maintaining records of completed continuing education coursework. LACPA supplies a document that certifies the licensee was present for the entire program and earned the continuing education credits.

It is important to note that APA and BBS continuing education rules require that LACPA only give credit to those who attend the entire workshop. An evaluation of the workshop must be completed. Those who arrive more than 15 minutes for a six hour program, 10 minutes for a four or three hour program, 5 minutes for a two or one and one half hour program; after the scheduled start time or leave before the workshop is complete will not receive CE credit. Partial credit may not be given.
