Presenter: Michelle Craske, Ph.D.

9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.  CE Credits 4.0

In this workshop, Michelle Craske will model the newest cognitive-behavioral techniques to treat anxiety and unipolor depression, while also imparting the theoretical underpinnings of these emerging approaches. Dr. Craske’s cutting-edge treatment protocol is based on her research on “threat sensitivity,” which is characterized by avoidant behaviors, attentional bias to threat, and biased interpretation of ambiguous cues as threatening. Exposure to these avoided cues and its corresponding cognitive restructuring become powerful therapeutic tools to treat anxiety and depression.

• Didactic presentations, role-play demonstrations and group practice will teach optimal ways of conducting exposure to avoided internal (e.g., memories, images) and external cues.

• Exposure techniques will be based on an inhibitory learning model in which the goal is to structure exposure to avoided internal events so that these threat-based expectancies are optimally violated (which then involve fear toleration) and the development and the retrieval of new inhibitory (non-threat) expectancies which become strengthened.

• Advanced cognitive restructuring skills to address elevated estimates of risk, perceived catastrophe and self-blame for negative outcomes.

Michelle G. Craske Ph.D., is Professor of Psychology and of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, and Director of the Anxiety Disorders Research Center, at UCLA. She has published extensively in the area of fear and anxiety disorders, including over 300 scientific articles, four books and several self-help books and therapist guides. She is a member of the DSM-V Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Spectrum, Posttraumatic, and Dissociative Disorders Work Group, and Chair of the Anxiety Disorders Subworkgroup. Additionally, Dr. Craske is a member of the APA Clinical Treatment Guidelines Advisory Steering Committee for the development of practice guidelines.
