 The Psychotherapist as Artist

We seek entries from artists for an exhibition featuring two different domains:


—-Visual Arts Exhibition (Juried)

—-Poetry Reading



GALLERY HOURS: Tuesday - Saturday, 10 - 5 PM






LOCATION: Castelli Art Space, 5428 Washington Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90016


ELIGIBILITY FOR PARTICIPATION: Open to all LACPA members as well as all non-member psychologists, psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, clinical and research psychology professors/instructors, and psychotherapy graduate students, both nationally and internationally.



All varieties of multimedia visual art are welcome: painting, drawing, photography, textiles, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, woodwork, furniture, and other 3-D pieces.


SELECTION CRITERIA:  Artistic value, psychological significance, and originality


SUBMISSIONS: The Castelli Art Space is suitable for all types of multimedia and visual art. You may submit up to 3 pieces per medium. All art must be psychologically themed and/or psychologically meaningful. All work submitted must be original and include an Artist Statement for gallery pieces, as specified in the Registration Form. 


SUBMISSION DEADLINE: September 3, 2019






There are no size or weight restrictions on pieces submitted, except that you must be able to physically transport your own pieces to and from the gallery. Up to 3 pieces per medium may be electronically submitted as a JPEG file; the higher the resolution, the better. Each piece must have its own Artist Statement (see details on the Visual Arts Registration Form), must be original, and must be psychologically themed and/or psychologically meaningful.


PROCEDURE: Complete the Visual Arts Registration Form (separate link) and include your artist statement(s). Email the registration form and all accompanying JPEG images as attachments to: mirrorsofthemind2019@hotmail.com


ENTRY FEE: For the gallery exhibition of visual artworks, there is a nonrefundable $25 per piece artist submission fee for Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) members, a $35 per piece fee for non-LACPA members, and a $20 per piece fee for psychotherapy students. NOTIFICATION: Results of the jury process will be emailed to all artists by September 30, 2019.


LIABILITY WAIVER/ENTRY AGREEMENT: The artist assumes all risks for loss, breakage, and damages to any artworks submitted. The artist releases LACPA, the Castelli Art Space, and any volunteer connected with the event from any liability for such loss, breakage, and/or damages. By entering this exhibition, the artist hereby agrees to the above Liability Waiver and to abide by all the rules and stipulations set forth in this Prospectus. 


PHOTOGRAPHY PERMISSION: Any submitted photographs which feature identifiable individuals require their written permission for use of their image. This permission is a protection for both you as the artist and LACPA, as well as being an acknowledgement of the rights of the individual in the photograph.


TRANSPORTATION and DELIVERY: All art accepted for the show must be hand-delivered by artists or their proxy on the days and times provided in the acceptance letter. Art must be framed or equipped with wire hangers and ready for display. All art must be carefully packed by the artist or proxy and delivered in protective packaging. Please do not mail artwork unless you make prior arrangements with the curators.


RETURN: It is the responsibility of the artist to pick up art from the gallery during the day and times indicated following the exhibition.



POETRY READING (NO ENTRY FEE):  If you would like to read your original poetry beginning at 6:30 PM on November 9, please reserve your spot with Nicole Flowers, PsyD, our poetry host, through her email: nicoleflowerspsyd@gmail.com or by phone: 310-592-3952.

This unique opportunity to read your poems is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Robert Bilder, PhD, is the Tennenbaum Family Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and Professor of Psychology at UCLA, where he directs the Center for the Biology of Creativity.


Rebecca Catterall is an educator, artist, and community activist. She is Past President of the Topanga Canyon Gallery and serves as an Education Consultant for the Centers for Research on Creativity, Los Angeles.




Terry Marks-Tarlow, PhD, Co-Chair, LACPA Community Outreach Committee, is a clinical psychologist and author of numerous papers and books on creativity, play, clinical intuition, and nonlinear dynamics. She illustrates her books, dances, does yoga, and wrote librettos for two operas that opened at Lincoln Center in New York City. She is Core Faculty at the Insight Center, Adjunct Faculty at Pacifica Graduate Institute, and she is Visiting Professor at Italian Università Niccolò Cusano (London).


Pamela McCrory, PhD, Co-Chair, LACPA Community Outreach Committee, is a clinical psychologist who has an interest in creativity and the integration of psychology and the arts. She is co-editor of the APA Psychotherapy and the Arts Newsletter, has served on the Executive Committee of the Society for the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts, and co-chaired the 2014 APA Community Arts Project. She is Assistant Clinical Professor in the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.
