PROSPECTUS

Entries from artists are being solicited for an exhibition including three different domains:

—-Visual Arts Exhibition (Juried)

—-Poetry Reading

 

ART EXHIBITION DATES: NOVEMBER 21 -  DECEMBER 1, 2018

GALLERY HOURS: Wednesday – Saturday 1 – 6 PM

 

ART GALLERY RECEPTION: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 2018

 6 – 10 PM

POETRY READING 6:30 PM

ELIGIBILITY FOR PARTICIPATION: Open to all LACPA members as well as all non-member psychologists, psychotherapists, psychoanalysts, clinical and research psychology professors/instructors, and psychotherapy graduate students, both nationally and internationally.

 

VISUAL ARTS EXHIBITION (GALLERY)

All varieties of multimedia visual art are welcome: painting, drawing, photography, textiles, jewelry, sculpture, ceramics, woodwork, furniture, and other 3-D pieces.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA:  Artistic value, psychological significance, and originality


SUBMISSIONS: The Santa Monica Art Gallery is suitable for all varieties of multimedia and visual art. You may submit up to 3 pieces per medium. All art must be psychologically themed and/or psychologically meaningful. All work submitted must be original and include an Artist Statement for gallery pieces as specified in the Registration Form. 

 

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: September 10, 2018

 

VISUAL ART SPECIFICATIONS:

There are no size or weight restrictions on pieces submitted, except that you must be able to physically transport your own pieces to and from the gallery. Up to 3 pieces per medium may be electronically submitted as a JPG file; the higher the resolution, the better (e.g., 2550 x 3300 pixels, equivalent to 8.5 x 11 inches at 300 dots per inch). All work must also be accompanied by an artist statement (see details on Visual Arts Registration Form), be original and psychologically themed and/or psychologically meaningful.

 

PROCEDURE: Complete the Visual Arts Registration Form (separate link), which includes your artist statement(s) and email the registration form and all accompanying JPEG images as attachments to: mirrorsofthemind2018@hotmail.com.

 

ENTRY FEE: For the gallery exhibition of visual arts, there is a nonrefundable $25 per piece artist submission fee) for Los Angeles County Psychological Association (LACPA) members, a $35 per piece fee for non-LACPA members, and a $20 per piece fee for psychotherapy students. Pay the Artist Entry Fee (separate link).

 

NOTIFICATION: Results of the jury process will be emailed to all artists by October 21, 2018.

 

LIABILITY WAIVER/ENTRY AGREEMENT:  The artist assumes all risks for loss, breakage and damages to any artworks submitted and releases LACPA, the Santa Monica Art Gallery and any volunteer connected with the event from any liability for such loss, breakage, and/or damages. By entering this exhibition, the artist hereby agrees to the above Liability Waiver and to abide by all the rules and stipulations set forth in this prospectus. 

 

PHOTOGRAPHY PERMISSION: Please only submit photographs of identifiable individuals from whom you have written permission to use their image. This permission is a protection for both you as the artist and LACPA, as well as an acknowledgement of the rights of the individual in the photograph.

 

TRANSPORTATION.  DELIVERY: All art accepted for the show must be hand-delivered by artists or by proxy on the days and times provided in the acceptance letter. Art must be framed or equipped with wire hangers and ready for display. All art must be carefully packed by the artist or proxy and delivered in protected form. Please do not mail artwork unless prior arrangements with the curators have been made. 

RETURN: It is the responsibility of the artist to pick up art from the gallery during the days and times indicated following the exhibition.

 

 

POETRY READING

POETRY READING (NO ENTRY FEE):  If you are a poet and would like to read your original poetry beginning at 6:30 on November 24, please reserve your spot with Nicole Flowers, Psy.D., through her email: nicoleflowerspsyd@gmail.com or by phone: 310-592-3952. This unique opportunity to read your poems exists on a first come, first serve basis; so please make your reservations as soon as possible.

 

 

JURORS

Robert Bilder, Ph.D., is the Tennenbaum Family Professor of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences and Professor of Psychology at UCLA, where he directs the Center for the Biology of Creativity.

 

Rebecca Catterall’s career has followed the paths of an educator, artist, and community activist. She is Past President of the Topanga Canyon Gallery and serves as an Education Consultant for the Centers for Research on Creativity, Los Angeles.

 

Gus Harper is a full-time artist. He has shown at numerous galleries around Los Angeles, New York, Mexico City, New Orleans, and soon at The Artwork Network in Denver, Colorado.

 

CURATORS

Terry Marks-Tarlow, Ph.D., Co-Chair of Community Outreach Committee is a clinical psychologist who has written a creativity curriculum for educators, and illustrates her own books, including the Truly Mindful Coloring Book as well as Clinical Intuition in Psychotherapy.  She sits on the Advisory Board of the Global Alliance for Transformational Entertainment.

 

Pamela McCrory, Ph.D., Co-Chair, LACPA Community Outreach Committee is a psychologist who has an interest in creativity and the integration of psychology and the arts. She served on APA’s 2014 Presidential Arts and Psychology Committee and co-chair of task group for community art at APA 2014 convention. She currently serves on the Executive Committee of the Society for the Psychology of Aesthetics, Creativity and the Arts.
